Using Your Smartphone to Learn English (スマホを使った英語学習)
In this day and age, almost everyone owns a smartphone. We use it in a lot of ways to make our lives more convenient and fun. Having one also enables us to keep in touch with family and friends anytime and anywhere we are in the world. It is no secret to us that smartphones are also great tools for learning. In this blog post, I’d like to share with you some tips and tricks to maximize your smartphones to learning and bettering your English skills. Let’s dive right in!
いまや誰でもスマホを持っている時代。私たちの生活を便利で楽しくするためにいろんな使い方をしているよね。それをひとつ持っていれば世界中いつでもどこでも家族や友達とつながれる。すばらしい学習ツールであることも疑いようがないね。で、今回のブログでは、学びに、そしてみなさんの英語スキルをよりよくするためにスマホを最大限に利用する方法を伝授しちゃいます。
1. Change your language settings
Using English as your phone’s operating language indeed sounds like a challenge. You might end up guessing the meaning of words and phrases you see on your phone screen. It sounds overwhelmingly difficult for some learners but this serves as an instant daily reading practice and a vocabulary learning opportunity for you. When watching videos, you can also turn on the English subtitles to pick up new words and phrases.
言語セッティングを変更しよう。
スマホの基本言語を英語設定にするって、ほんとチャレンジよね。スマホのスクリーンに出てくる単語や熟語の意味を推測することにもなるとおもうの。ひとによっては超大変だろうけど、毎日の読みの練習や単語学習の機会を即席で作ったことになるわ。ビデオ見るときも英語字幕を選べば同様の効果があるわよ。
2. Record your voice
Smartphones come with a built-in voice recorder app. You can record your speeches or pronunciation drills and practices of words you might be finding hard to pronounce. Keeping a log of pronunciation recordings will help you track your progress. The key lies in your confidence in listening to your own voice recordings. This will also help you overcome any awkwardness you feel when listening to yourself talk in English.

ボイスレコーダー機能がスマホにはあるでしょ。これを使ってスピーチや発音練習、発音の難しい単語練習を録音することができる。記録をつけることで向上の具合を確認できるじゃない。で、カギとなるのは録音した自分の声の自信の度合いね。これやることで、英語で自分がしゃべっているのを聴いたときに「ぎこちないな」って思った部分を修正していくのに役立つわよ。
3. Capture photos
Camera phones provide a great way to record vocabulary around you. Indulge yourself in taking photos of the outdoors or the indoors. When you’ve got the time, you can get back to the pictures you took. Try your best to talk about the objects you see in the photos using the English language. You can also take the challenge up a notch by adding a time limit to the exercise. This helps you think more in English-a skill that is very important to achieving fluency in the language.

スマホカメラはあなたのまわりの単語の記録に最高ね。外出先でも家の中でもどんどん写真をとろうよ。そして時間があるときに、撮った写真をみるの。そしてあなたが撮った写真の中のものを英語で話すことにチャレンジしよう。このトレーニングに時間制限をつければ速く話す練習にもなるね。これってその言語、英語の流ちょうさをアップさせるのにとても有効なの。
4. Take down notes
This is probably the easiest to do in your smartphone. It’s basically the digital log of new words and phrases you have learned. Just like the old saying goes, “A short pencil is better than a long memory.” When you take note of something, may it be on a piece of paper or your phone’s notes, you instantly create and keep a reference and you’re more likely to remember something in the first place.
メモをつけよう。
これがスマホでやれる一番簡単なものかな。基本的には、新しく学んだ単語やフレーズを記録するってことなんだけどね。「A short pencil is better than a long memory.」っていうじゃない。紙でもスマホでもメモをとっておけばすぐ、あとで参照できるものを作れるし保管しておけるし、なにより、より記憶に残ると思うの。
5. Download useful apps
This is also another easy way to support your English learning. Finding good apps and downloading them on your phones make it more convenient for you to learn or review topics wherever you are. You can also download dictionary and translation apps on your phone to help you look up meaning of words you are not familiar with.

これもあなたの英語学習サポートをする方法としては簡単なものになるわ。よいアプリを見つけてダウンロードすればどこにいたって、学習に、そして復習にと、より便利になる。辞書や翻訳アプリもダウンロードできちゃうので、なじみの薄い単語を調べたりするのに役立つね。
6. Make social connections
Smartphones help us stay connected. This also enables us to connect with people who speak the language we are currently learning. Through the internet, we can find other groups or communities that share the same interest or learning objectives with us. There are a bunch of sites and apps that may match you up with another learner. You don’t only sharpen your skills, you also make new friends! It’s like hitting two birds with a single stone.

スマホは人とのつながりにも役立っている。いま学んでいる言語を話す人とのコミュニケーションも可能にするでしょ。インターネットをとおして、同じ興味や学習目的を持つほかのグループやコニュニティーを探せるってこと。ほかの学習者とのマッチングをしてくれるたくさんのウェブサイトやアプリがあるから、それを使ってスキルアップだけじゃなく新しい友達だってつくれるよ。一石二鳥！
