Training your brain to think in English: An Exercise 英語脳へのエクササイズ

In a previous blog post, I have shared some tips to kick start your brain to think in English. To help you further with your English brain training, I have come up with some exercises to do just that. Let us get right into it!

Step 1. Name objects in words and phrases.

Let us begin by looking at the picture above. It is a pretty simple photo of a restaurant with objects and people in it. Name the things that you see and think of how they are called in English. It is totally fine if you are unable to give all of their names. Take note of those you could not name and look them up later and memorize the words. To add challenge to this exercise, I recommend setting a timer, say two minutes; to train your brain to think faster in the target language.

Step 2. Describe happenings in simple sentences.

After naming things in the photo, we can now move on to longer strings of words. This time you can describe what is happening in the picture above.

For example: The waiter is serving drinks.

You can start with a single subject followed by a verb and an object.

You can also describe the overall atmosphere in the picture.

For example: It is a relaxing day in Bar La Salseta.

写真全体の雰囲気を言ってみるのもいいね。例えば「Bar La Salsetaのくつろぎの日」なんてかんじ。

Step 3. Create situational conversations.

Now that we have created sentences, we can proceed to talking to ourselves which can be done in silence or aloud. It sounds a little strange but is absolutely a crucial step in this training. By doing this, your brain is trained to anticipate and infer responses of the person you are talking to. This also prepares you on what to say in certain situations. Let us relate the conversation we are going to have to the picture in this exercise. Think of both the waiter’s parts and yours.

For example:

Waiter: “Welcome to Bar La Salseta. Are you ready to order?”

You: “Yes. I’m new here. What do you recommend?”

Waiter: “If you like pasta, our pasta of the day is a great choice.”

You: “Great. I’ll have that then.”

That is all for today’s training. I hope you can try this exercise on your own too! Good luck!
