In this day and age, many of us tend to spend more online. As we scroll through articles and posts on the internet, we come across words and phrases we might find hard to make sense of. Today, I’d be sharing with you letter combinations you have probably stumbled upon before. The examples on this list are some of the most common three-letter abbreviated forms of phrases. Let’s get right into it!

今の時代、私たちは多くの時間をインターネットに費やすようになったでしょ。 すると、ネット上の記事や投稿をスクロールして、意味不明な言葉やフレーズに出くわすことがあるとおもうの。そこで今回は、たぶんみんなも一度はみたことがあるであろう文字列、それをシャアしておきますね。今回紹介するのはとても一般的な三文字からなる短縮言葉。覚えちゃおうね！

1. OMG

OMG is probably the most commonly used internet slang. It basically means Oh My God/ Gosh! It is a comment you make on something amazing, terrific or horrible. OMG!   

Example: OMG! I just saw Lady Gaga crossing the street!

OMGはインターネット用語として最も一般的なんじゃないかな。「Oh My God! / Oh My Gosh!」ってことね。驚いた時ならいいことにも悪いことにも使うんだよ。

2. LOL   

You will see this in comments pertaining to something funny. It is the abbreviated form of laughing out loud. 

Example: The meme she sent me was so funny lol.

これは「何かおかしなコメント」などに付随して出てくる。「laughing out loud」の短縮形で「大笑い」っていう意味だね。

3. SMH

When you come across something you find disappointing or unbelievable you can use SMH which means, shaking my head.

Example: Smh. This is such a terrible and distasteful show!

がっかりだったり、信じられないことに対して使うのが「SMH」。「shaking my head」の短縮形で、「ありえない！ / あきれた！」ってかんじ。

4. IRL  

IRL is short for in real life. This means that we’re talking about our normal, everyday life and not the digital lives we might have created online.

Example: I have made a lot of friends online but have never met them irl.

「IRL」は「in real life」の短縮形。デジタル（ネット）社会でのことでなく、ふだんの実生活のことを話してる、ってことを意味するの。

5. TBH

This term encourages online users to express their honest opinion on a post, a comment or an event. TBH is short for to be honest. 

Example: I was so shocked about the news. I don’t even know what to say tbh.

「to be honest」を意味するこの言葉。投稿 / コメント / 出来事について正直どう思ったか、という意味でつかわれるね。

Indeed, the internet has become the most interesting source of trendy words and phrases we use to communicate with others. Take note though that some, if not most of these, are very casual and might not be used in verbal in person communication. But if you are often lurking around the Web, knowing these might come in handy!

インターネットはコミュニケーションを図るうえで最もはやりの言葉やフレーズの源といえるね。ただし、これらすべてじゃないけど、いくつかはおしゃべりのような直接のコミュニケーションには使わないので気を付けてね。でも、インターネット上ではしょっちゅう見かけるはずなので、知っておいて損はないよ！
