Hello, everyone! How’s it going? I am back with another entry for my little corner called “My Eureka Moment!”
What I love about having one-on-one classes with my students is that I can pick up so many points which need improving and I can write about here and solve the little mistakes.
It was quite surprising for me to discover that a lot of my students didn’t know about the difference of want and would like.
みんな元気にしてるかな？今回も「ユーリカ！」ってなっちゃうことを紹介するね！
生徒さんとのマンツーマンレッスン、英会話のなかからたくさんの間違った言い方をピックアップして、ちょっとした間違いをここで正してあげることでみんなの上達につながれば、って思ってるんだ。
で、今回取り上げるのが「want」と「would like」の違いについて。これを知らない生徒さんが結構いることに気づいて、ちょっと驚いちゃった。
The main difference is only the informality and formality.
‘want’ is more casual or informal, while
‘would like’ is more proper and formal
主な違いは「かしこまった言い方かどうか」だね。
「want」はカジュアルな言い方なのに対して「would like」は、より丁寧な言い方ってわけ。
You should be able to use these two depending on the context.
A kid might say:
Mom, I want to go to the bathroom.
And sometimes, ‘want to’ may be contracted to become
Mom, I wanna go to the bathroom.
状況に応じてこれら二つを使い分けるといいよ。例えば、
子供が「ママ、トイレに行きたい。（want to はwannaとくっついて使われる場合もある）」って言うよね。
The speed of talking and the tone will absolutely affect how you sound like to someone listening to you. So, using ‘want’ in a restaurant or in an airplane may sound a bit blunt and impolite.
話すスピードやトーンは聞き手がどのように感じ取るかに影響するわけで、「want」を同じようにレストランや空港でものを頼むときに使うのはちょっとぶっきらぼうに聞こえるってわけ。
It is possible to say,
I want a blanket, please.
Despite inserting ‘please,’ it still wouldn’t sound as polite as saying,
I would like a blanket, please.
「I want a blanket, please.（毛布をください。）」って言った場合、「please」という単語を使ってはいるけれど「I would like a blanket, please.」と言ったときの礼儀正しさには及ばないわ。
In a nutshell, it is important to know when to use “want” and “would like” if you care about courtesy and politeness.
要は「礼儀」が必要かどうかの場面で「want」「would like」を使い分けてほしい、ってことね。
